Working with individuals always involves an element of interrelationships with work colleagues and family members as well as romantic relationships. We are who we are because of our experiences in relationships over the course of our lives. Individually people often choose to dig into their own weaknesses and overcome their own personal struggles.


In my teaching years I remember all the scrunchy faces when working with teens was mentioned. Not only do I understand this group but I enjoy them. Having a teen whose parents are younger than I am consider me her best friend was the supreme compliment — and trust me she got her share of feedback from me! Establishing a comfortable environment to get them to open up is critical to beginning to change their choices and their behavior.


Successful couple relationships are always a challenge. No one ever teaches us how to do them successfully and most come to marriage or their romantic relationships knowing only what NOT to do— or with the unconscious patterns we learned observing our parents’ relationship. Learning about the strengths and weaknesses of your mate and being able to identify relationship dynamics that have a tendency to surface can be an enormous weapon in changing a tense home environment to a pleasant and happy one.


Working with younger children is very specialized work. Much of it is interpreting their play as symbolic as to how they see the world. It is harder for children to put accurate emotional descriptions of their feelings into words, so seeing how they choose to play is very helpful to see how well they are coping. Children very quickly show their feelings in how they play with everything from dolls to puppets to even how they handle challenges in game play. If children have been intimidated in any of their adult to child relationships this process of establishing a safe rapport can take longer.
